Peterborough has been ranked as the least healthy place in Britain

Peterborough has been ranked as the least healthy place in Britain, coming in at 307th in health statistics for its population. Stewart Francis, our Chair of Healthwatch Peterborough, is calling for increased investment in the city's healthcare system in response to the survey.

The rankings were determined by Blue Horizon, a blood testing company, using data from the Office for National Statistics across 12 key health areas. Each area was scored out of 100, and the cumulative score placed Peterborough at the bottom.

Stewart acknowledged this ranking and said: “This is not surprising and is helpful in focusing minds because we have known for a long time that life expectancy is lower than the national average and lower than anywhere else in Cambridgeshire. The differences are stark across the county.”

He also emphasised the need for sustained efforts in education, housing, and primary care to address these health inequalities.

The data highlights a particularly poor performance in the percentage of people with self-reported kidney and liver diseases. Kidney Research UK, based in Peterborough, predicts a significant increase in the number of people living with kidney disease by 2033.

Despite the grim statistics, our Chair urged residents not to panic, pointing out positive trends. “We shouldn’t forget that there are more GP appointments being attended at GP surgeries than there have ever been. There are more operations at Peterborough City Hospital than before Covid.
