Celebrating NHS staff achievements with HUC

Healthwatch Chair Val was delighted to be one of this year's judges at the recent HUC staff awards - celebrating the achievements of staff and teams within our local NHS 111 and out of hours' GP service provider.

More than 180 people were nominated by HUC colleagues and the winners were chosen by a panel of five judges.

Many of the nominations were linked to the challenges that Covid brought to everyone over the last year.  And much of it was for the support colleagues gave each other or going above and beyond what was expected to help make the service run.

Val's feedback

Val told us it was, 'An absolute pleasure to look through the nominations and see the personalities and contributions of the people who have been nominated which just shone through.'

'And to understand the teamwork, the shifts, the 24/7 nature of what you do and also to appreciate the stress and trauma of dealing directly with the public at their time of crisis and need.'

And during this time of Covid our attention is often drawn to people on the frontline and hospitals, and we forget that actually there's a frontline that your team are working on as well.

What do HUC do?

HUC may not be a familiar name to most local patients in Peterborough but the service they provide is well known and used by thousands every week.

They offer the telephone NHS 111 service - so are the ones you speak to you when you call looking for urgent help.

Their team of advisors, supported by experienced nurses and paramedics, will ask you questions to assess your symptoms, and give you the advice you need or arrange help from the right person or service, saving you time and worry.

That could be A&E, an In or Out of Hours Doctor, an Urgent Care Centre or a Walk-in Centre, a Community Nurse, an Emergency Dentist or Pharmacist or even an appointment at your own GP.

Where possible, the NHS 111 team will book you an appointment or transfer you directly to the people you need to speak to and if NHS 111 advisors think you need an ambulance, they will immediately arrange for one to be sent to you.

Calls to 111 are recorded. All calls and the records created are maintained securely, and will only be shared with others directly involved with your care.
