At its AGM in Sawtry last week, the organisation gave its backing to the Time to Change campaign to end mental health stigma and discrimination.

In the UK, 1 in 4 workers are affected by anxiety, depression and stress every year.  Mental ill-health is the leading cause of sickness absence in the UK, costing an average of £1,035 per employee per year.

Time to Change asks employers to change the way they think and act about mental health in the workplace.

Healthwatch–the independent champion for people who use health and social care services in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough – is now one of over 1000 pledged employers who have signed up and created an action plan to help get its staff talking about mental health.

“We’re a responsible employer and care for the wellbeing of our fabulous team,” Healthwatch Board chair Val Moore told the AGM.  “We want to do all we can to help break the silence and end the stigma around mental health.”

In order to sign the pledge, the organisation had to write an action plan spelling out what it plans to do.  As well as highlighting mental wellbeing at team meetings, Healthwatch is appointing a staff member and a director to champion mental health.
