Healthwatch Peterborough has the power to Enter and View health service providers, to observe matters relating to health and social care services.
As a local Healthwatch we have a legal right to visit any publicly funded health or care services, to see and hear how people experience the services. This work is called “Enter and View”.
This gives us the opportunity to:
- Collect the opinions and experiences of people using these services, their carers or relatives.
- Talk to staff that are providing the care.
- See the nature and quality of services.
- Develop an insight into the delivery of the services.
- Write a report based on our findings including recommendations on the service.
We work with care providers to improve local provision. We do this by sharing our Enter and View reports with the care provider, the CQC, Peterborough City Council’s Adult Social Care team and of course you the public by putting all these reports on our website.
Enter and View is not an inspection. Our team are not inspectors like the Care Quality Commission (CQC)
However, all Authorised Representatives who conduct Enter and View visits have a Standard DBS check and are trained to a high standard. This includes safeguarding training.
During an Enter and View visit, Authorised Representatives can be identified by their official ID badges.

Reasons for Visiting
We listen to the views and experiences of local people and work closely with other partners to identify themes in local care. These themes inform why we visit services and what areas we consider during our visit.
How does it work?
- Step 1
We arrange a visit with the service and prepare our visiting team with relevant information.
- Step 2
On an agreed date, our trained enter and view representatives spend time at the location, talking both to people receiving care and those providing it.
- Step 3
We write and publish a report here and share it with the organisation involved, as well as the CQC, PCC:ASC and any other interested parties.
Previous Enter and View visits
Mostly recently we have visited 3 Care Home in Peterborough to look at meal time arrangements. This piece of work has led to a number of recommendations to improve residents’ knowledge of meal time options and more visible information on organised activities for residents. We also organised an Enter and View of the A&E department at Peterborough City Hospital. As a result will be working with the hospital to investigate why people choose A&E over other more appropriate services and look at ways to promote alternative services more effectively.
